Dr. Jennifer Usiak received her DVM degree in 2002 from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY and has been a gifted small animal practitioner ever since. She grew up just outside of Buffalo, NY and since the age of seven, envisioned her life as a veterinarian. This was the age she started helping her mother take the family pets to the vet. Growing up, her veterinarians were such an inspiration to her and they even gave her the opportunity to start working at an animal hospital at the age of 16. She has been in this profession for many years and dabbled in a wide range of experiences including working on a horse farm, volunteering at an aquarium, working in a cancer research laboratory and presenting a goat and cow in a local animal show. Her most treasured experience by far has been working at remote villages throughout rural Guatemala. Here she had the experience of establishing an animal husbandry program for both large and small animals. It was an eye opener for her to see animals being over worked and underfed with minimal veterinary care. It was an overwhelming experience that made her appreciate all that we have here in the United States. It also really helped her to develop a desire to teach and educate people and see what a great impact that can make.
Dr Usiak has also been inspired by great many teachers in her life, including her parents. She now shares a great interest in teaching and teaches a surgical and anesthesia course for veterinary technicians at the North Shore Community College. She also enjoys teaching her staff and clients and has taught a Pet First Aid class over the last few years to the community.
Dr Usiak works with a wide range of species from dogs and cats to ferrets, birds, reptiles and rodents. She enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine but has a great interest in soft tissue surgery, ophthalmology and dentistry. She is thankful that this profession has given her such a variety of challenges and opportunities and is glad that everyday always brings something new and exciting.
